£2m Scunthorpe operating theatre refurbishment complete

Our dedicated surgical team are looking forward to welcoming their first patients to our fully refurbished operating theatre.

For the last 30 years the team has been performing a huge range of elective and emergency procedures in the Scunthorpe General Hospital’s Theatre E.

And now, as part of our ongoing drive to improve facilities at our hospitals in Northern Lincolnshire and Goole, the theatre has been fitted out with the very latest equipment and facilities.

We have also completely replaced our medical air plant and installed a new specialised air handling plant and equipment.

The £2 million programme has been completed by contractors Morgan Sindall and will be ready to receive its first patients from this week.

Theatre Manager Christopher Graygoose said: “These new facilities will enable us to provide the highest standards of care to our patients – which will always be our top priority.

“While no one wants to come into hospital for a surgical procedure, I hope that knowing that we’re continuing to invest in improving and upgrading our facilities will put our patients’ minds at ease.

“This theatre is used both for elective surgical procedures and in supporting our colleagues in Accident and Emergency in caring for trauma patients.

“As a result of the refurbishment, we now have Laminar Flow support – which creates a sterile air zone around the patient, providing additional protection from the risk of infection.

“We also installed new internal walling and created new ancillary areas.

“One of these is a dedicated area where we can anaesthetise patients before taking them through the theatre, providing them with additional privacy and peace of mind.

“We have also created new areas with bespoke, high-level hygiene facilities, where my surgical teams can prepare themselves and the equipment needed for each procedure.”

Mr Graygoose added: “I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the programme for their dedication to providing the best possible facilities for our patients.

“Thanks to their commitment and high standards, we have been able to continue offering elective surgical procedures throughout the development, even with the additional demands resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic.”
